Web Directories: What are They and Why Do They Matter?

If you operate a website, whether casually or for commercial purposes, you probably want to get as many people as you can to take a look. For business sites in particular, hits determine the difference between success and failure. If you hope to get more hits at to your website or blog, you might want to consider submitting to some of the numerous web directories. Web directories, also known as link directories, maintain lists of websites, generally classified by category. Web surfers will generally arrive at directories looking for a certain product or service. In many cases these categories can get quite specific; for example, an individual searching the Yahoo! Directory could go for “Recreation,” and then go through the subcategories “Outdoors,” “Fishing,” and finally “Walleye Fishing” before getting to the list of sites that they’d really like to see.
